Ideally, you should hold a Level 3 qualification and English at level 2, but applications are welcomed from mature students without this formal qualification, but who have relevant work experience. About the Course
Retail is one of the largest employment sectors in this area, and despite the current economic climate, it is set to grow within the area over the next 20 years. Compared to other major sectors, employees tend to have fewer qualifications. A foundation degree in retail management will better equip you to run operations, retain and motivate staff, improve the service, and of course have the edge over your competitors. The Foundation Degree in Retail Management aims to give practising or potential Retail Managers the foundation for their formal development in this role. The programme has 2 primary objectives:
The course runs for 2 years - typically one day and one evening per week. There are no classes over the busy Christmas period, but there will be some additional workshops during the early summer period. A key feature of a Foundation Degree is that the work-based learning and much of the study will be based on the work environment. Students are able to study whilst working in the retail sector.
Course Content
CREDITS: The programme consists of 240 credit points to be completed over a two year mode of study, made up as follows:
YEAR 1: Retail Environment, Legal Environment for Retail, Retail Consumer Behaviour Managing HR in Retailing, Retail Customer Care, Retail Communications, Leadership and Management.
YEAR 2: Retail Marketing, Retail MIS Systems, Retail Financial Information Management, Visual Merchandising Management, Retailing Logistics, Retail Promotions, Work Based Learning Research Project.
Assessment
Assessment is ongoing and consists of a variety of methods. Throughout the year you will be required to undertake both group and individual assessments. These assessments include essays, reports, and presentations, reflective diaries and action plans. The assessments are designed to test your knowledge and understanding of the appropriate subject matter, and also to demonstrate a range of skills and competences you will need to develop to work in business.#
Study Hours
Approximately 9 hours of class time. Time management is essential to ensure that you achieve in this course. You are likely to be balancing work with your employer, your studies, and a range of social commitments. There is a significant amount of work which you will need to complete outside of class time.
