Course Description:
The Chartered Institute of Marketing is the professional body for those employed in a marketing capacity. The CIM Professional Certificate is aimed at anyone working in a marketing or sales environment, such as marketing assistant. You may decide that you wish to undertake the full qualification in one year by attending 2 sessions per week. Alternatively, you may wish to spread your study over a longer period of time by taking individual modules.

Marketing is a profession that offers challenges, excitement and variety. It also demands high levels of motivation, commitment, adaptability and perseverance. Not a career for the faint-hearted! Those who succeed are highly rewarded with careers throughout the marketing spectrum both in house or with an agency.

The Professional Certificate in Marketing gives you the practical skills and knowledge to devise and execute marketing activities and gain marketing credibility. It also aims to provide a practical insight into the principles and application of marketing at a tactical level.

The syllabus has been updated recently to reflect the changing issues and practices within marketing and to reflect employers' views of marketing in today's business environment. The qualification is ideal for junior marketers, those working in marketing support roles (like personal assistants); or if marketing plays some part in your current job description.

Entry Requirements:
You will need to be 18 or over with at least 2 A Levels or equivalent qualifications, or the Introductory Certificate in Marketing. Applications are welcomed from students over the age of 19 without these qualifications but with at least two years' work experience in Marketing.

Course Content:
The CIM - Professional Certificate qualification consists of 4 modules, which are assessed either by an examination or by a work-based assignment, at the end of each module. Students must enrol on each module separately.

  • Marketing Essentials (exam)
  • Assessing the Marketing Environment (assignment)
  • Market Information and Research (assignment)
  • Stakeholder Marketing (assignment).

MARKETING ESSENTIALS (0050A-1/1): The aim of this unit is to provide a detailed explanation of the key theories and practice behind marketing as an exchange process and a business function. This unit introduces individuals to the importance of the marketing planning process and the role of marketing across the organisation.

ASSESSING THE MARKETING ENVIRONMENT (0050B-1/1): The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the nature and scope of the internal and external marketing environment with broad consideration of the impact of international and global marketing. The unit addresses the key characteristics of the marketing environment and assesses the impact of market forces that are uncontrollable and how an organisation responds to them.

MARKET INFORMATION AND RESEARCH (0050C-1/1): This unit focuses on the importance of marketing information in gaining a more in depth understanding of both the market in which the organisation operates and the customers it seeks to serve. The unit explores different research methodologies and encourages consideration of complementary approaches to collecting a range of market and customer information.

STAKEHOLDER MARKETING (0050D-1/1): The focus of this module is to recognise the nature and scope of an organisation's diverse range of stakeholders (of which customers are part) and their relative importance to the Marketing process and the market oriented organisation. The unit considers how to manage stakeholder relationships effectively, in terms of utilising a marketing mix that influences and satisfies stakeholder needs in line with the organisation's business and marketing objectives.

Assessment:
Each module is assessed either by an examination in December or June or by a work-based assignment, depending on the module. You will need to register directly with Chartered Institute in Marketing as a member and register for exams.
