New Course will Shape the Future
28/06/2010
University Centre Milton Keynes is helping shape the future by becoming one of the first universities in the UK to run a foundation degree in Sustainable Communities.
Supported by the national Homes & Communities Agency, the idea behind the new degree, which begins in September, is to equip people with the right skills needed to improve the way new communities are created and managed.
"The course is about why we build our towns and cities the way we do and how we can improve things in the future. It's not just about the physical fabric of a place, but also about how you grow and develop a community once the bulldozers have moved out," explained Kate Stephens, Project Director at the Centre for Leadership at UCMK.
"UCMK is here to deliver the skills the city is going to need for its future, and key to that is shaping, creating and sustaining a thriving economy and community," she added.
The three year course, run in partnership with the University of Northampton, is ideal for people already working in the housing, planning, urban development, social care, voluntary, regeneration and community sectors.
"It's also an opportunity for businesses and workers who are new to Milton Keynes who want to learn more about our growing city and how they can have a real impact on its future," said Kate.
The foundation degree course will be taught in two day block-learning sessions once a month.
